What an Operating System Actually Does

The OS Layer Cake: From Hardware to Your Apps

Every operating system is structured in layers. Hardware sits at the bottom. Your applications sit at the top. In between, the OS provides services that make the two ends compatible. Process Management: The Art of Doing 300 Things at Once

A process is a running instance of a program. When you double-click Chrome, the OS creates a process. Open a second Chrome window, and depending on the architecture, the OS may create additional processes. Each process gets its own isolated chunk of memory, its own set of permissions, and a ticket to compete for CPU time.

Here is the thing that feels like magic: your CPU can only execute one set of instructions at a time per core. A typical modern laptop has 4 to 8 cores. But your system is running 200 to 400 processes. How does 8 cores handle 300 processes simultaneously? The answer is time-slicing.

The OS gives each process a tiny slice of CPU time -- typically 1 to 10 milliseconds -- then pauses it, saves its exact state, loads another process, lets that one run for a slice, pauses it, and so on. This rotation happens so fast (hundreds of times per second per core) that every process appears to be running continuously. Each time the OS pauses one process and starts another, it performs a context switch. Process States and the Scheduler

Not all 300 processes on your system are actively competing for the CPU. At any given moment, most are in a waiting state -- sleeping until something happens. Your email client is waiting for new messages. Your file manager is waiting for you to click something. Only a handful of processes are actually ready to run, and the OS scheduler decides the order.

Modern schedulers use priority levels. A process handling your mouse cursor gets higher priority than a background update check. Audio playback gets high priority because even a tiny delay creates an audible glitch. Every process needs memory. Your browser needs memory for the current webpage, for JavaScript code running on it, for images being rendered. Spotify needs memory for the audio buffer. Virtual Memory: The Clever Illusion

What happens when all your running programs need more memory than you physically have? The OS uses a technique called virtual memory. It gives every process the illusion that it has access to a vast, continuous block of memory -- far more than the physical RAM installed. When you save a document, the OS does not simply dump bytes onto your storage drive and hope for the best. NTFS (Windows)

This incompatibility is why you cannot just plug a Mac-formatted external drive into a Windows PC and expect it to work. Fragmentation is another file system concern, though it matters less than it used to. On a traditional spinning hard drive, files written over time get scattered across different physical locations on the disk. The Android connection is worth emphasizing. When someone says "Linux is only 4% of desktops," they are missing the bigger picture. Android is Linux -- the Android operating system is built on the Linux kernel with a Java-based runtime on top. Three billion active Android devices make Linux, by kernel count, the most widely used operating system in human history. iOS uses a Unix-like kernel (XNU, shared with macOS) but is not based on Linux.

The "best" operating system depends entirely on the use case. For gaming and general desktop use, Windows wins on software compatibility.
